Is size a major factor in IT planning and policies?

Do share your thoughts about IT planning of SMB’s, when considering SMB/SME, I am referring to 10-50 employees.

Hi Shwetha,

A key consideration is to ensure that IT is perfectly aligned with the Business goals and not knowing the business goals is not a valid excuse. It's up to IT to know, else perils abound and the function will be perceived as nothing more than a cost of doing business :-) When everyone has a clear, shared understanding of WHAT needs to be achieved, HOW this is one and WHY it's improtant success prevails and IT projects get delivered on time - everyone is happy.

We've coded what we know on this - I hope this framework is useful to you:

Hello Shwetha

If the Company uses computers and the internet and has employees(irrespective of the number) it is critical to have a well defined IT policy. The policies should have 'teeth'... i.e. employees should be made accountable for implementing the policies. The best way to do this is to include this is the Job profile and as an objective for the performance appraisal. Including the Company's IT policies in the induction for new hire is important. Drive home the ramifications of abuse of the IT infrastructure in your offer letter. For good measure have a Non-Disclosure Agreement in place. Form a small team of 2-3 employees headed by you who are 'in charge' of these policies. There needs to be a sustained approach towards implementing these policies if you are introducing these to exisiting employees.

The policies you may need to put in place are 1. Email Policy 2. Internet usage Policy 3. Data Protection/Retention Policy 4. Backup and Disaster Recovery Policy 5. Technology Policy 6. Security Policy 7. Inventory and Identification of all IT assets, Location and User/User Groups.

I hope this answers your question... let me know if you need any additional information.

Best
Padmavani
