Over the past few months, the Industry and the Government have been experiencing a series of Industrial Relations (IR) concerns. Violence in Industrial Relations is once again resurfacing reminding many of us of unpleasant episodes of the 70’s and 80’s. These incidents are a wakeup call to the Industry and the HR fraternity. The Ideal situation therefore is to pro actively prevent and manage such incidents. While the old style of IR may not be preferred, proactive employee relations may be the need of the hour. Further, the emergences of the new White Collar Unions who have no linkage with political leadership seem to be growing at a rapid pace. Are there any lessons for the HR fraternity from such white collar unionization like airline pilots and the very recent IIT faculty?

Reflecting on the current educational scenario, one would recognize that Post Graduate centers producing the HR professionals seem to have tilted their focus from IR during the past two decades and more towards HR. This is perhaps creating the existing dearth of IR professionals at all levels. It is time for the HR fraternity to reflect on the competencies of an IR Manager and possibly distinguish the same from that of existing HR competencies. This would then finally facilitate in the development of IR professionals at various levels.

Given this context, I am pleased to inform you that Confederation of Indian Industry – Southern Region is organizing a one day interactive workshop on “IR Issues for HR Managers” on 24 February 2010, Hotel ITC Windsor, Bangalore.

We have invited eminent experts from Government & industry to address this session and take us through some very critical IR cases and enable us to understand the importance of the skill required in managing such cases. The draft programme is attached herewith for your ready reference and use.
